Trust Urges Fans To Donate to Foodbanks – If You’re Able To Do

Keith Morgan

Cardiff City Supporters’ Trust is urging Bluebirds supporters to follow fans across the UK and donate to their local foodbanks –if you can.

Liverpool and Everton fans launched an initiative back in 2015 to help those in food poverty under the initiative Fans Supporting Foodbanks after being inspired by the work of Celtic supporters.

The current coronavirus pandemic has exacerbated the situation for many individuals and families with the Trussell Trust reporting last September that there had been a 61% increase in demand for food parcels.

Trust Chair Keith Morgan said: “Many people across south Wales have struggled to buy food for themselves and their families due to a sudden loss of income in the wake of the pandemic.

“Those in need have turned to foodbanks for help and as a Trust we wanted to invite members and fans generally to support them – if they are able – by donating food or by making a financial donation.

“When fans are eventually able to return to Cardiff City Stadium the Trust will be looking to launch an appeal for donations to be brought to our offices at the ground. They will then be distributed to local foodbanks.”

Phillip Nifield (Press Officer)

Who are you? Phillip Nifield

Where do you live? Cardiff

What do you do for a living? Retired Journalist

Why did you join the Trust? The Trust is the best organisation for channelling the views of fans through to the club and ensuring the voice of supporters is heard.

Why would you encourage fans to join the Trust? The Trust is a very open organisation and can raise issues of concern with the club. The more members we have, the stronger we are and the more influence we can have on behalf of the fans.

Why did you seek election to the Trust Board? I believe through my work in the media as a newspaper journalist and later as a Press Officer means I can make a strong contribution to spreading the message of the Trust to as wide an audience as possible.

What is your aim for the Trust over the next 12 months? We need to continue raising the profile of the Trust by taking up matters of concern and interest to our members and City fans generally.

How long have you supported City? Since season 1959-60 – the year the Bluebirds won promotion to the old First Division.

What was your favourite City match? The 1-0 win over Real Madrid with Brian Clark’s winning goal.

Who is your favourite City player/s? From the past Ian Gibson, Dave Bennett and Willie Anderson. In modern times the late, great Peter Whittingham with his wand of a left foot.

City Beat Real Madrid 50 Years’ Ago Today

March 10th, 1971 will live in the memory as perhaps Cardiff City’s greatest triumph.

That was the day when the Bluebirds defeated Real Madrid 1-0 at Ninian Park with a header from super striker, Brian Clark. At the time, Real Madrid was not the force the club has been during the last few years but it was still a landmark achievement.

Sadly, the Bluebirds lost the return leg 2-0 but they took Real Madrid very close.

There have been FA Cup successes and promotions but this match stands out above all for older City supporters.

Thanks to Trust member Chris Edwards for sending us an image of his precious framed Real Madrid collage as a memory from the night, as well as items from a 35th anniversary celebration held in 2006.

Chris wrote: “Can’t remember much about the match but remember the huge crowd roar on the Bob Bank, where I was standing, with my brother when Brian Clark scored. Up the  City.”
