RACE NIGHT IN AID OF KEENOR STATUE APPEAL

The Fred Keenor fundraising committee, in conjunction with Eric Harmer, landlord of the Duke of Clarence, is holding a race night next month.

The event takes place at the pub in Clive Road, Canton, Cardiff, on Thursday, April 14, (7pm for 7.30pm start) with proceeds going to statue appeal.

You can help by buying and naming a horse for just £5 as well as turning up on the night. And if your horse wins the race, you’ll pick up a prize, courtesy of one of the race sponsors who are local businesses.

To register a horse, just email fundraising@ccfctrust.org with a name and contact details. We will confirm your horse and inform you of the race they will be entered into. Cheques or postal orders for £5 payable to the Fred Keenor Statue Fund will need to be sent to the appeal project manager David Craig at 19 Wordsworth Avenue, Penarth, CF64 2RL, at least a week before the race night.

David Craig said: “Eric has been a great supporter of the appeal and we’re delighted that he has offered to run a race night. He’s got a wealth of experience of race nights and we’re confident that punters will have a fun night and a tidy sum will be raised for the appeal.”

The fund currently stands at more than £42,000 – almost half way to the £85,000 target.

FAW GIVE GO-AHEAD FOR KEENOR COLLECTION AT WALES-ENGLAND CLASH

We’re delighted to announce on St David’s Day that the Football Association of Wales has given the go-ahead for a bucket collection in aid of the Fred Keenor Statue Appeal at the sell-out Wales-England clash.

David Craig, project manager of the appeal, said: “Playing England is always the biggest game for Welsh football fans, so we’re thrilled the FAW has generously given us permission to hold a bucket collection before the Euro qualifier later this month.

“With a sell-out audience, we are very hopeful of raising a substantial sum for the appeal thanks to the support of fans at the game.

“Football supporters have been enormously generous already and the message we’re getting from them is that we want to see a statue erected in aid of Fred Keenor, who captained both Wales and Cardiff City to great success, and reached the top of the game despite being badly injured in the Battle of the Somme.

“We’re hoping that supporters, wherever they come from, will get behind the appeal by digging deep into their pockets while also cheering Wales on to a famous victory over the old enemy. That would be fantastic,” said David.

The appeal, which was launched 11 months ago, has raised more than £41,000 – almost half-way to the £85,000 cost of the permanent tribute to Fred Keenor.

The international takes place at the Millennium Stadium on Saturday, March 26th, kick off 3pm.

THE FRED KEENOR STATUE APPEAL AND CARDIFF CITY

Some fans on supporter message boards have queried Cardiff City’s support for the Fred Keenor Statue Appeal. Fund project manager David Craig sets the record straight.

“The appeal for donations to help create and erect a statue to commemorate the life and career of Fred Keenor is making excellent headway and has topped £41,000 – almost half the £85,000 needed.

This is because of the wonderful support we have had from fans and also the support and direct involvement of Cardiff City Football Club – its management and staff.

Since the start of the fund-raising campaign 10 months ago, it is clear that the club fully understands and supports the appeal.

The club’s response to our request for help has been immediate. In addition, it has come up with its own ideas for publicity and fundraising and has followed these through to great success.

Two bucket collections have been held at the stadium and another bucket collection is planned before the season’s end.

The stadium superstore also sells the eight-inch statue maquettes pin badges on our behalf.

In July 2010 the club donated £1 from the sale of tickets for the Deportivo La Coruna friendly game and an evening with Dave Jones and Ricky Tomlinson proved a huge success.

The stadium was also made available at very short notice for a curry and quiz evening and staff were a great help.

We’ve been able to set up a Fred Keenor Statue Appeal display table on Levels 2 and 3 of the Grandstand on two match-days, and are more planned.

A tour of the stadium for fans has been organised and we hope to hold more during 2011 with another celebrity evening planned for later in the year.

If you have received your season ticket application form for 2010-11 you will see that there is an opportunity for fans to donate money in aid of the appeal when they renew their tickets.  This was agreed to by the club without hesitation.

So, on my own behalf and the Fred Keenor Statue Appeal Group, I’d like to thank everyone at Cardiff City for their backing and involvement.”
