From Tashkent With Love: Get your book

The excellent From Tashkent With Love: Cardiff City and the Cup Winners’ Cup 1964-93 by Mario Risoli was launched at Cardiff City Stadium on Monday.

More than a dozen players from those great European adventures were present, along with journalists who reported on Cardiff City for the South Wales Echo. They told some fantastic stories of those European games, particularly of the clash in Tashkent with Torpedo Moscow.

The publication coincides with the 50th anniversary of City’s first Cup Winners’ Cup campaign.

We have around 30 books available for purchase from the Trust office. Trust members will have a £1.95 reduction on the normal price of £16.99.

The book will be on sale from the Trust office (near Gate 5) from 1pm-2.45pm on Saturday.

It would make a great Christmas present for members or relatives or friends who are Bluebirds fans.

Reminder We’ve also got a few remaining copies in the office of Paul Evans and Richard Holt’s excellent book, The Journey Back: Cardiff City’s Rise Through the Divisions 1991 to 2013. The Journey Back costs £19.50, but Trust members can get it at the discounted price of £17.50.

Communities come together through football – and help raise money for Ty Hafan

Elite 7 Winners Trust tournament 2014The Cardiff City Supporters’ Trust and Show Racism the Red Card’s community five-a-side competition was won by Elite 7, a team from Grangetown and Butetown. In a tight match they beat Clwb Cymric 1 – 0.

Twenty teams from across Cardiff played in the tournament which was also sponsored by Co-Operative Cymru/Wales. Through sponsorship and donations £900 was raised for Ty Hafan.

The teams involved included those from the Bengali, Somali, Yemeni, Jewish and Indian communities, the Blue Dragons (Cardiff LGBT team) and Ty Hafan Fathers Group.

Trust Chair, Tim Hartley, said, “It was great to be able to bring together men and women from very different backgrounds to make friends and raise money for a very good cause. Thanks to everyone who took part in what was a great day of football.”

Trust welcomes plans for greater fan involvement.

Tim HartleyThe Trust has welcomed the Labour Party’s proposals to give football fans a bigger say in the running of clubs – if they win the next UK General Election.

Trust chair Tim Hartley said: “I welcome Labour’s commitment to ensuring fans have a real role in owning and running their clubs.

“In Wales we understand what a vital role football clubs play in our communities. Swansea. Merthyr, Wrexham and Newport have shown how successful clubs which share ownership willingly with supporters’ trusts can be.

“These proposals again underline the need for a formal role for supporters and real transparency in football to be embedded in law.

“We look forward to other political parties coming forward with proposals aimed at ensuring that the views of the fans are properly considered when discussions are taking place about major changes at clubs and issues like ticket prices.

“There are millions of pounds more coming into football through TV deals but the price of football keeps going up. That doesn’t make sense. Fans have been marginalised for far too long by many clubs and owners and that needs to end.”

Game On volunteers watch Wales with help from the Trust, Gôl and the FAW

fernhill boys 3Volunteers in the Game On Wales programme were able to redeem some of the time they have invested in their community with a trip to support Wales in the recent Euro 2016 qualifiers.

The innovative Time Banking scheme rewards people who volunteer in the running and promotion of the Game On project.  The tickets, which were arranged with the FAW by Gôl in conjunction with Cardiff City Supporters’ Trust, were earned by young people from communities in Merthyr, Rhondda Cynon Taff and Abertillery and gave the volunteers the opportunity to watch Gareth Bale and Co in their matches against Bosnia Herzegovina and Cyprus at the Cardiff City Stadium.

Chris Foot, Game On Training and Development Officer,  said: “These young people are integral to the running of Game On and we hope that they will become the sports coaches and community leaders of the future.  Rewarding them with an experience such as this shows how highly we value their contribution.”

Jessica Lloyd, Youth Support Worker for the Fernhill Youth Project, added: “The Game On project has provided a fantastic opportunity for our young people. Their ongoing involvement as players has helped them develop a range of skills and I’ve seen them become more confident. Having the chance to go down to the stadium and watch a Wales qualifying match was brilliant for the boys, especially as some of them haven’t been to a professional match before. They all had a great night and are excited to get back to playing in the league!”

Game On Wales is a Coalfields Regeneration trust project funded by the Big Lottery Fund Wales.  Game On leagues and activities are free to participants and are being run across Wales, contact gameonwales@coalfields-regen.org.uk or call 01443 404455 for more information.
