TRUST COMMUNITY EVENT WINS UK PRAISE

A COMMUNITY event staged by Cardiff City Supporters’ Trust has won recognition from the UK-wide Supporters Direct movement.

The initiative to engage with minority communities living around the stadium is now being trumpeted as good practice which can be used by other Trusts.

In an email newsletter, Supporters Direct said: “This month we wanted to highlight some of the great community projects that Trusts are delivering around the country, so the first half of the April update is dedicated to just that.

“A well thought out and executed project can help foster strong partnerships amongst key stakeholders, and give a healthy boost to the profile of the trust.”

The community event was organised last September by the Cardiff City Trust, partnered by the British Council. Around 100 local people attended along with representatives of the Trust and Cardiff City management and players. SA Brain has also provided sponsorship for the event.

Trust board member Tracey Marsh, who organised the event, said: “The Trust is delighted that our community event is being showcased by Supporters Direct as an example of good practice.

“The Trust believes it is important to engage with communities living around the new stadium where there is huge untapped potential support for Cardiff City.”

The Trust also organised a questionnaire to get a better understanding of the feelings of the local community towards the football club.

The Trust is holding a five-a-side community soccer tournament at the Gol Centre in Leckwith on Sunday, April 25th, and a Battle of Bands event in June is also planned as part of a series of community-based initiatives.

FRED KEENOR NEEDS YOUR HELP!

The Fred Keenor Statue Committee will next month (April) launch its campaign to raise funds to erect a statue to honour Cardiff City’s legendary FA Cup winning captain.

We’ve already had significant support from Cardiff Council, which has pledged £15,000, and £1,000 has also been promised by the Cardiff City Supporters’ Trust  board.

We need to raise around £85,000 to make the dream of honouring Fred and the rest of the famous 1927 winning team a reality.

A statue design by sculptor Roger Andrews was chosen following a public vote and the committee will be holding discussions with the club shortly over a location for the statue.

The committee, set up by the Trust, has been working away contacting organisations and businesses and that will continue.

But we are now calling on the superb fans of Cardiff City to play their part in this hugely worthwhile campaign. Fred has never been properly recognised by the city of Cardiff and we aim to put that right.

We will need help when fundraising kicks off in earnest so could anyone willing to assist in the months to come please send their details, including contact information, to fundraising@ccfctrust.org Please mark your email for the attention of David Craig.

Also, if you’ve got any bright ideas for raising funds we’d also like to hear from you, and you don’t have to be a member of the Trust. We want as many supporters as possible involved to ensure it is a success.

DAVID CRAIG,

FRED KEENOR STATUE COMMITTEE/

TRUST SET TO MEET TG OVER CITY INVESTMENT

Cardiff City Supporters’ Trust has asked potential investor Dato Chan Tee Ghee (TG) to meet its board members when he next visits Cardiff.

On his return to Kuala Lumpur, TG told board member Anthony Wedlake, who contacted him on behalf of the Trust,  that he hoped that meeting could take place ahead of the Cardiff City-Swansea City derby on Easter Saturday, when he is due back in the UK

In an email to TG, Anthony Wedlake said: “The Trust has been established for just over one year and has already established itself as the democratically elected voice of Cardiff City supporters with a fully paid-up membership of nearly 1,000 fans, a greater number than that of, for example, Arsenal Supporters Trust.

“The supporters’ trust movement in the UK has become increasingly influential and successful in representing the interests of ordinary fans. As you will appreciate, fans don’t have the luxury of changing ‘brands’, we are fans for life and it is important that we have a say in how our club is run.

“We would welcome an open dialogue with you as a new fan of Cardiff City and as someone with the potential to take the club forward.

“We believe, as you must do, that the club has tremendous potential with Premiership football a real possibility whilst also becoming a vibrant business,” added Anthony.

Tim Hartley, Acting Chairman of the Trust, said: “We’re delighted that TG responded so positively and promptly to our request for a meeting. We felt it was important to establish lines of communication with a potential investor and we hope a deal for additional investment into the club can be concluded as quickly as possible.”
