Cardiff is coming together through Football!

More than 14 community and faith groups from all over Cardiff are coming together to celebrate friendship through football. The Cardiff City Supporters Trust’s Community 5-a-side Tournament hopes to promote discussion and understanding across the diverse communities of the capital city.

The tournament takes place on SundayOctober 19th, at the Gôl Centre in Leckwith with kick off at 11 a.m. The event marks the start of Show Racism the Red Card’s two weeks of action which sees supporters, professional football clubs and players working together to make racism a thing of the past across Europe.

All proceeds from the tournament will go to the Supporters Trust’s chosen charity, the local children’s hospice, Ty Hafan.

Tim Hartley, Chair of the Cardiff City Supporters’ Trust, said, “Cardiff has always been proud of its diversity and the way people from very different backgrounds all live peacefully together. There is so much more in this city which unites rather than divides us. This tournament is a great way to bring together through football men and women who might otherwise never have met while raising money for a very important cause.”

Ali Abdi, Youth and Community Worker, said: “I know the teams from our diverse communities in Cardiff are looking forward to coming together not only for football but to also raise money for Ty Hafan. One young person from the Somali community, Ibby Abdi, who attends St.Davids Catholic College, has won a prize to donate £500 to charity.  After reading how they provide comfort, care and support to life-limited children he has selected Ty Hafan and Ibby will be commended during the tournament for his generous contribution.”

Paul Fisher at Tŷ Hafan said: “The Dads’ group at Tŷ Hafan is delighted to be taking part in this exciting project to bring communities together. Many of the dads have found a sense of shared community through football and other activities so appreciate what a great opportunity this is. We are extremely grateful to have been chosen as a beneficiary for the raised funds and thank all those taking part.”

Trust chair’s plea as new manager is appointed

Trust chair Tim Hartley has wished  Russell Slade well as he takes over as new Bluebirds manager.

Tim Hartley said: “The appointment of Russell Slade comes at a crucial time for Cardiff City. We desperately need a period of stability if the club is to prosper.

“Fans have stuck by the club through all the off the field controversy. It’s now time for the players, management and supporters to work together to get the City back into the Premier League.

“We wish Russell well in his new role and hope he can turn around the fortunes of the club so we can quickly move up the Championship table.”

Criminalising football fans: London event

Institute of Ideas event in association with the FSF

Football supporters going to see their teams play can experience a degree of regulation and control that few others encounter, outside of an airport.

From “bubble matches” forcing visiting fans to travel in designated coaches leaving from their own club’s stadium, to Football Banning Orders for fans who’ve never been convicted of a crime, to Section 27 of the Violent Crime Reduction Act which allows police to remove someone from a particular area – even if no offence has been committed, fans seem to be singled out, particularly those who follow their side away from home.

Despite this, fans rarely feature in civil liberty campaigns. So is it time to stand up for football fans’ freedom of movement, speech, and fair treatment under the law? Or are these measures necessary to prevent a return to the “bad old days”? Are fans singled out because of prejudices relating to football’s working class roots? What can be done to allow the law-abiding majority to enjoy their sport, without being made to feel like criminals?

A friendly welcome to travelling Bluebirds fans from the Seagulls

A message has been sent to the Trust from staff at Brighton and Hove Albion FC. The Bluebirds visit the Amex next week.

The fans and staff at Brighton are looking forward to the visit of Cardiff fans to the Amex next week. There is a host of activities awaiting the visit of the Bluebirds including the lighting of the concourse in blue to make fans feel welcome and the staff will be wearing Cardiff City Supporters’ Trust shirts.

There will be a male vocal group before the match singing ‘Sussex by the Sea’ and they are currently learning the words to ‘Men of Harlech’ too. There is live music outside the stadium which has an adjoining bar area. This is open to home and away fans so feel free to join the Brighton fans for a pre-match drink.

If you have any questions regarding your trip to the Amex, you can contact Brighton directly through Twitter on @BHAFCAway

Have a good trip!
