CITY v PARMA: HELP THE KEENOR APPEAL AND GET FREE TICKET

The following message has been issued by David Craig, Project Manager of the Fred Keenor Statue Appeal.

A bucket collection for the Fred Keenor statue fund is taking place at the Cardiff v Parma match on Saturday July 30th. We’re going to get the funds this year – honest!!!

If you are going to the Parma game please could you help out? Wayne Nash and some of the stadium staff are keen to shake a bucket on this occasion and I would like to think that we could match their enthusiasm. If you can’t make it do you know anyone who is going who might be willing to hold a bucket, there is also the added benefit of being issued with the stylish Keenor T-shirt.

We will be meeting outside the Stadium’s main reception at 1.30 and will collect until 2.50ish. Please respond directly to my email address d.craig43@ntlworld.com.

Everyone who helps with the collection will be given a free ticket for the game.

    ASSEMBLY MEMBERS BACK KEENOR APPEAL

Seven members of the Welsh Assembly have given their backing to the campaign to honour Wales captain Fred Keenor, who skippered Cardiff City to FA Cup triumph in 1927.

Julie Morgan (Cardiff North), Mark Drakeford (Cardiff West), Vaughan Gethin (Cardiff South & Penarth), Jane Hutt (Vale of Glamorgan), Mick Antoniw (Pontypridd), Lindsay Whittle (South Wales East) and Leanne Wood (South Wales Central) have all said they support the appeal to build a statue in honour of Fred Keenor.

The campaign, officially launched in April last year, has raised £51,000, including a commitment of £15,000 from Cardiff council, towards the £85,000 needed.

Julie Morgan has requested a meeting to discuss the proposed tribute with Huw Lewis, the Minister, who now has responsibility for sport. Members of the Fred Keenor Fundraising Committee met with Julie Morgan on Friday to discuss the appeal.

David Craig, project manager and Cardiff City Supporters’ Trust board member, said: “The meeting was very useful and we’re very grateful for the backing of Julie who has been a great supporter of the appeal.

“As fans we believe it is important that the iconic figure that is Fred Keenor is properly honoured. Here was a working class lad, who went to Stacey Road School in Cardiff and rose to captain his home town team and his country.

“He did so despite being badly injured in the dreadful Battle of the Somme, the 90th anniversary of which is in 2011. We believe strongly that Wales should recognise working class heroes like Fred as well as the great and good.”

Cardiff City has pledged to donate £1 from every adult ticket sold for the pre-season friendly against Parma to the appeal.

Fans can donate to the appeal fund through the Co-operative Bank:

Account name: –   Fred Keenor Statue Fund or FKSF

    Account no    65392368

    Sort Code     08-92-99

Cheques can also be sent c/o CCST to PO Box 4254, Cardiff, CF14 8FD. Please add the words “Fred Keenor Appeal” on the top of the envelope.

    Supporters’ Direct 2011 Annual Conference

    Sharing experience with Supporters Direct

    Supporters' Direct 2011

Tim Hartley, Chair of CCST with Mark Evans (Merthyr Tydfil Trust)

The Trust attended this year’s Supporters Direct conference in Chester. SD is the umbrella organisation for all sports trusts in Britain and the conference allows us to swap ideas with other football trusts and to discuss the way ahead for the movement. The breaking news from the conference was that the Premier League funding on which SD depends has been reinstated after a threat to withdraw it.

Much of the discussion centred on how we can ensure community ownership of clubs. Now while that might not be possible for us at Cardiff it is great to see lower and non-league clubs taking up the challenge and actually getting their hands on the club itself.  I can’t wait for the FA Cup draw to throw up MK Dons versus AFC Wimbledon! What we have seen at Merthyr, Swansea and hopefully at Wrexham shows that fans can take control of clubs and that is surely a good thing.

During last year’s election campaign all major parties made manifesto commitments to reform football. The coalition government’s programme also talks about co-operative ownership of clubs and we await the parliamentary report following the MPs inquiry into football governance to which we as Trust gave evidence.  Football is not like any other business and clubs deserve special status as vital parts of the community. We must modernise the way they are owned, have transparency of ownership, establish a proper licensing system and have independent scrutiny of how clubs are financed. Did you know that 52 of the 92 league clubs have suffered insolvency since 1992? Something must be done!

Cardiff City was singled out at the conference for particular praise by Mark Bradley who runs the Fan Experience Company. He told delegates that the efforts the club has made to ensure going down the City is a good family experience, treating visiting fans with respect and the more relaxed attitude to standing in certain sections of the Stadium, have all been recognisedby the footballing authorities. Equally important is that those steps should act a catalyst for further fan friendly changes and help shake off the bad image that we as a club have suffered from.

It was good to meet fans from all over the country and reassuring that they have similar problems and issues to us. Chester FC and Stockport County spoke of the need for supporters groups to come together every so often and I am glad that we at Cardiff have such a good relationship with the Supporters Club. There was much talk of the new demand on clubs to appoint a designated Supporters Liaison Officer and we wait to see how this one works with our club. If you want to discuss any of these issues further we can go through them at the next Trust open meeting.

Here’s looking forward to a brilliant new season.  Let’s get behind Malky and the boys!
